אריה נולד בשנת 1937 בבוקרשט שברומניה. מגיל צעיר התעניין באמנות, התרשם מציורים שראה במוזיאונים והחל לצייר. בשנת 1950 עלו אריה, הוריו ואחיו נחום לישראל והקימו את ביתם במושב בית הלוי. עם סיום לימודיו בבית הספר התיכון המקצועי אורט, התגייס אריה לצה”ל. את שירותו הסדיר העביר בחיל הקשר, ולאחר מכן שירת שנתיים נוספות בשירות קבע בפלוגת הקשר של חטיבת גולני, שם הכיר את אשתו לעתיד, נגה, בת קבוצת כנרת. אריה ונגה נישאו בנובמבר 1961 וגרו בחיפה. ב-1964 עברו לקרית ים, שם נולדו שלושת ילדיהם איל, גיל ואורלי.
עם שחרורו מהצבא, עבד אריה כגרפיקאי ומאייר, וכעבור מספר שנים החל לעבוד בתחנת החוף, בה עבד עד יציאתו לגמלאות. (תחנת החוף סיפקה שירותי אלחוט, מברקים, טלקס ושיחות רדיו-טלפון לאוניות בלב-ים, וכן שירותים נוספים כמו האזנה לתדרי מצוקה וסיוע בזמן חרום. התחנה הופעלה על ידי משרד התקשורת ומאוחר יותר עברה לידי חברת בזק).
במקביל לעיסוקיו האחרים, המשיך אריה במשך כל השנים להקדיש זמן רב גם לאמנות ולתחביבים שאהב – צילום, פיסול, נגרות ובעיקר ציור במגוון סגנונות – שמן, מים, אקריליק, פחם ורישום. הוא למד אמנות באוניברסיטת חיפה ובמרכז הבין תחומי ללימודי אמנות שבמכללת הגליל המערבי וצייר במסגרות שונות, בין היתר אצל הצייר גרשון קניספל. אריה היה חבר אגודת הציירים והפסלים בישראל, ותמונותיו הוצגו בתערוכות משותפות של חברי האגודה בחיפה. בתמונותיו מקומות ונופים מהצפון, בהם אהב גם לטייל: הכרמל, הגליל, נמל עכו, צפת, הכנרת ועוד. אריה צייר בעיקר עצים, מבנים עתיקים, סירות דייג ואת הים, אותו אהב במיוחד.
בקיץ 2011 חזר אריה לראשונה מאז גיל 13 לרומניה לטיול שורשים, ביקר בבית שבו גר עם הוריו ובמקומות נוספים אותם זכר מילדותו בבוקרשט, ובבית הקברות היהודי העתיק בבוקרשט, שם קבור סבו מצד אמו. אריה נפטר ב-16.3.2012 בגיל 74. באתר זה, שהקמנו לזכרו, מוצגות חלק מעבודותיו הרבות. נמשיך להעלות לכאן תמונות ועבודות נוספות. אתם מוזמנים להנות מהתמונות, ולשתף ברשמים ובזכרונות.
Arie Cohen was born in 1937 in Bucharest, Romania. At a young age, he became interested in art. He was deeply impressed by the paintings he saw in museums and began to paint. In 1950, Arie, his parents, and his younger brother Nahum made Aliyah and settled in Moshav Beit Halevi in Hasharon. After graduating from the professional high school ORT, Arie joined the army. He served for three years in the Signal Corps, and for two additional years in the permanent contact unit of the Golani Brigade, where he met his future wife, Noga, from Kibbutz Kinneret. Arie and Noga got married in November 1961. After living in Haifa for three years, they moved in 1964 to Kiryat Yam, where their three children Eyal, Gil and Orly were born. Upon his release from the army, Arie worked as a graphic designer and illustrator, and a few years later began working at the Radio Coast Station, were he worked until his retirement. (The Coast Station provided wireless services, telegrams, telex and radio phone-calls to ships, as well as additional services, e.g. listening to distress frequencies and providing assistance during emergencies. The station was operated by the Ministry of Communications and later was taken over by the “Bezeq” telecommunications company). Throughout the years, Arie continued to devote time to art and to the hobbies he loved: photography, sculpture, carpentry, drawing and painting in a variety of styles – oil, aquarelle, acrylic, and charcoal. He studied art at the University of Haifa and at the center for Interdisciplinary Studies at Western Galilee College of Art. He painted in various contexts and programs including under the guidance of the artist Gershon Knispel. Arie was a member of the Painters and Sculptors Society and his paintings were exhibited in group exhibitions of the Society of Haifa. Arie’s paintings depict places and landscapes from the north of Israel, where he also liked to travel: the Carmel mountain, the Galilee, the old city of Akko, Safed, the sea of Galilee (“The Kinneret Lake”) among others. Arie painted mainly trees, ancient buildings, fishing boats and the sea, which he especially loved. In the summer of 2011 Arie took a heritage trip and returned to Romania for the first time since the age of 13. He visited the house where he lived with his parents as well as other places he remembered from his childhood in Bucharest, and the old Jewish cemetery in Bucharest (“Cimitirul Israelit”), where his maternal grandfather, Itzik Croitoru is buried. Arie died on March 16th, 2012, at the age of 74. We created this website and gallery of his artwork in his memory. We will continue to upload more of his paintings and artworks.
